2015 Essex Closed Racketball

It did not disappoint with 30 people playing across 4 categories all matches were played in a competitive yet friendly manner.

Some tough matches and some surprises along the way - the Open event saw veteran racketball campaigner Marc Thornley from Woodford Wells nearly knock-out hot favourite Rory Pennell. Marc took the match all the way to 10-10 in the 3rd, only narrowly losing out. Rory regained his composure for the
final only to go 1 down to an on form Jason Friend who was hitting superb line and length, cork screws all over the place and cutting the ball in short. The second game saw the tide begin to turn as Rory found his own line and length and continued to pick everything up at the front. Eventually Rory's fitness and youth started to show through and he came out 2-1 winner - a great final and a valiant effort from Jason.

In the ladies and B event Zoe Mellis continued to stamp her authority on the racketball fraternity winning both in some style - she'll now certainly be looking to hold on to her national title in the ladies O35 at Edgbaston in a few weeks.

The Over 50s saw an all Redbridge final between coach Dave Lazarus and Matt Hibberd. It was a hard fought final with Dave just having a little too much guile, allowing him to dominate the middle of the court, with the pressure eventually telling on Matt to give him a 2-0 victory.

Many thanks to all who played and to event sponsor Premier, specialists in steel and stainless steel fabrications.

We all look forward to an even bigger event next year.
