Inter County o55's Finals Weekend – Pontefract

Essex veterans travelled to up the A1 to Yorkshire to compete in the rearranged Inter County Finals weekend, bidding to be the first Essex Masters team in 42 years to win a National title. Originally scheduled for February, the new dates meant that two of the team couldn't make it due to prior commitments. But our team was strong, willing and able...and the venue was the famous Pontefract Club. Products of the club are such players as James Willstrop, a recent Commonwealth Games gold medal winner and former world no 1.

Well, what can I say, a hugely successful weekend for the Essex Ladies Squash Team, coming second in the National Inter County Finals.

"The weekend got off to a slightly shaky start with the captain driving the wrong direction on the M25, with the rest of the team wondering what they had gotten themselves into!

Essex storm to Finals Weekend!!
Essex Men’s o55’s travelled to Dulwich Sports Club for Phase 1 of the Premier Division clash. Opened by Roger Bannister in 1972, the club was busy all weekend with sport. Surprisingly early in the calendar, we only had a few weeks to prepare - and despite a couple of drop outs and availability issues we went with a strong team. The top two teams would go to Nottingham next year to contest the Final and be crowned National Champions.
Essex v Kent

Match 1 v's Kent, 3-2 to Kent
Michelle took Essex to an early lead with a convincing 3-0 win. Sarah had a tough game, losing in a close 3-1. Jackie was unlucky losing 3-0, and Elise fought off a tough opponent at number one, but held the match to win 3-0. This meant the decider was down to Sophie at number two, Sophie had a nervy start, and her opponent gave nothing away, she lost 3-0.

Richard Pilcher started coaching squash at Felsted School (Essex) in Oct 2014 as a volunteer assistant to the Level 1 coach (semi-retired staff member) Alisdair Thompson. Alisdair had started a club night at the school termed “Friends of Felsted’’ and introduced squash activities and games sessions in the senior school as he started to rejuvenate the squash offering. Alisdair retired in July 2014.

Essex duly won both matches 4-1 versus Oxfordshire and Kent.
